Employee Assistance for SMEs

What does such ’employee assistance’ refer to?

As we know, everyone gets stressed and anxious at times in their lives.

Today, in western society especially, there are so many ‘standards’ to meet that the stressors build up and up and up – and never really ‘come down’ or are managed well, if at all!

We know that stress is the result of a threat, and by now, perhaps you know (from reading my posts?) that the stress reaction is a natural defence mechanism to keep us safe from ‘a threat’ of sabre tooth tiger or job loss and income for mortgage payments – the same result. Stress.

So if you have personal and home stressors like children to school daily, attending concerts v staying at work late, or bereavements and self esteem PLUS work related stressors like covering workloads for colleague absences, a new boss who isn’t working with you well, or moving to a new site and extra commuting!

So larger employers have and EAP (employee assistance programme) in place to manage this and absence management, employee development and more.

Something I am keen on as not getting enough or the right support at the right time in some jobs, yet realising the benefit when I got this in other companies and even working for them at times – it’s essential to off some help and understanding, some ’emotional intelligence’ that your staff are people too – not just numbers covering tasks!

SMEs of under 50 employees perhaps often cant afford this option – they don’t see the value of spending on support and development of staff, or pay over the odds with larger organisations maybe.   Usually the former.

As a counsellor, coach and NLP mind-management professional (and mind-set and mind-awareness is the key here to managing stress) I am developing a new service to provide just this – a flexible service for you (self employed with 2 staff or  manager of > 50 people each with their own issues not to mention yours!) to utilise affordably and helpfully – for you both, for you all!

In a small organisation, one person off with ‘stress’ or bereavement and loss issues can mean failing to meet orders and commitments already made – it means the next employee will become stressed and overwhelmed covering two roles or one and a half (yes, that’s you covering the other ‘half’ of their job too!) – and the scenario goes on.

So what about another option?  You’re small, limited income as you continue to build your brand awareness, improve sales and develop your staff to a level you can ‘let them loose’ with minimum supervision and support.

Share the care!  

You pay half and they pay half of the cost.   You’re caring enough but practically cannot pay for each employees problems too.

You have your own problems in life and living, too, plus your business development and day to day running!

They, as employees of a small, local business and maybe on low income or minimum wage and unable to pay for professional private support or wait months for NHS help – they still get stressed, perhaps more than others with increasing bills, cost of child-care, paying a mortgage or rent, balancing it all too.

So share!  Communities come in all shapes and sizes!   Family groups – neighbourhoods – village and towns – society at large or countries!

Your community care can share the support and help each other this way.

The Problem

The ongoing pressures of life and learning have taken their toll but now this last straw breaks the camels back and the whole awful mess comes tumbling down around them!  They can’t manage it, cant cope anymore!

Example

It’s all too much and they eventually get back home, child in tow, no school release today and money pressures on top for repairs – not to mention getting to work tomorrow, arranging gran to get kids to school and walking to work for the early shift!

Phone Call Support:

So for £10 each you can have support, stress management, more information and options – and happier teams able to work well!

£20 for a call x 4 a year for when overwhelm hits @ £10 x 4 = £40 a year each (total £80 )

£20 each x 5 for F2F counselling/coaching support (coaching for tips and steps forward) = £100 each a year (over 4 or 8 weeks)

For you:

£20 + £100 per year x 30 employees = Potentially £3,600 for employee assistance -care, loyalty, return to work, resilience @ £300 a month (and only IF they all need the support!) If not, just those who do – maybe half, and as they learn tools/build resilience/experience it lessens annually!

Employee: 

£20 + £100 per year perk = £140 rather than  £280  – £10.75 a month
